Have you always wanted to keep perishables cold or frozen when sailing but were hesitant to put in a full-fledged marine refrigeration system? Four compressor-powered portables from Engel (model MT35F), Norcold (models MRFT40 and MRFT60; all manufactured in Japan by Sawafuji Electric), and Waeco (model CF-40 Coolmatic) are tested.

A portable refrigerator powered by a compressor has the added benefit of functioning as a freezer. As a bonus, they use fewer amps than thermo-electric coolers while effectively cooling the air. One of the most important aspects that Practical Sailor looked at was the amp usage while using a 12-volt power source since this is very important for cruising yachts. Because insulation is a significant efficiency element in maritime refrigeration tests, we also highlighted the best-insulated units in our comparison. Ultimately, it was clear that the linear compressor technology found in Engel and Norcold fridges/freezers were the superior options.
