Have you always wanted to keep perishables cold or frozen when sailing but were hesitant to put in a full-fledged marine refrigeration system? Four compressor-powered portables from Engel (model MT35F), Norcold (models MRFT40 and MRFT60; all manufactured in Japan by Sawafuji Electric), and Waeco (model CF-40 Coolmatic) are tested.
A portable refrigerator powered by a compressor has the added benefit of functioning as a freezer. As a bonus, they use fewer amps than thermo-electric coolers while effectively cooling the air. One of the most important aspects that Practical Sailor looked at was the amp usage while using a 12-volt power source since this is very important for cruising yachts. Because insulation is a significant efficiency element in maritime refrigeration tests, we also highlighted the best-insulated units in our comparison. Ultimately, it was clear that the linear compressor technology found in Engel and Norcold fridges/freezers were the superior options.
The widespread adoption of compressor-driven, portable refrigerators and freezers
at the expense of their predecessors is attributable to three main factors: They do their function invisibly, rapidly, and successfully. They are durable and need little upkeep, as has been shown. Unfortunately, the exorbitant price is a huge drawback. There is no substitute for the capability of one of these machines, however.
